Getting traffic

How to get good traffic

Now that you have your website up and running you are ready to do business. However, getting traffic to your site is the question because other than your family or friends no one has come to your website yet and bought anything 🙁  Unfortunately, that is a very common problem in the beginning.

I used to have a really nice stained glass studio in a large barn attached to our home. However, we lived in the country and besides a few neighbors I had no customers. The internet was not around then, so I had to do plenty of advertising, and it paid off, as my business grew into one of the largest studios in New Hampshire at that time.

The same holds true for your website. Getting traffic to your site is very important, not only getting the traffic, but knowing how to get it is the key.

There are several ways to get traffic to your website:

  • Free traffic, called SEO (Search engine optimization) is something you have to learn how to do. It takes time, and the best thing I can recommend is that you get yourself a good coach, like Matt Carter who knows his stuff when it comes to SEO.

  • Paid traffic, called PPC (Pay per click) When you go to google and search for a subject, you will see some ads on the top page of google; these are paid ads. Also on the right-hand side of the page you will see some ads, these also are paid ads. Every time you click on one of these ads, the owner pays a certain amount to google. You can advertise with google, yahoo, bing and msn for starters. A word of caution here: Make sure that you read google’s rules about google Adwords, before you start a campaign! Unfortunately I had help from a well-meaning friend to set up a campaign and the next day google suspended my account permanently!:( I may have had too many affiliate links on my site; I wasn’t really sure.  So, be very careful with google Adwords! Plus they are very expensive. So check out some of the sites below here.
  • Here are some you may want to try:

  • Social Media is a great way to advertise your website. Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin are all places that you should advertise your website. You can create a fan page or a business page  on Facebook.  You can also do a PPC campaign on Facebook and reach a huge audience since Facebook has about 900 million people and is the largest website on the internet, even bigger than google!

  • Advertising on other websites: Another way is to search for websites that have a good amount of traffic already and place a banner on their website. You usually have to pay for this service, but you can get on some sites for as little as $20.00 per month. I found a good website called where you can place a banner for $25.00 per month and they have good traffic!
  • Another website  advertising your business on is or these sites are mostly for women working from home.
  • You can check out any of these websites here: where you can find out how much traffic a particular website gets and their demographics.

  • Getting backlinks:

Getting backlinks to your website is also important and will help your ranking with google.

I have found this site where you can submit your website for free and get a backlink here:
